Среди тех, кто заканчивал РЭШ с нами с тобой, полно людей умнее меня (а про практичность ума и знание жизни и говорить нечего), но уровня PhD - не так уж много.

После того, как в трэде Europe американцы пособачились с европейцами касательно вопроса, где лучше жить (главным критерием почему-то выступали оркестры и театры), я решил внести в обсуждение свежую струю.
You're stuck in this discussion. If you aren't sure where to go -- USA or Europe -- try Moscow, Russia. You will like concert halls for sure, if that's your concern. Or, if your main concern is your stomach, there are so many diverse restaurants. And think about this: 13% income tax! Anyway, you will be superior middle class there. There is very little crime, it's directed towards foreigners, but not your type of foreigners. Life is expensive for foreign tourists, but when you adapt here, the cost of living will be much lower than US-wide or Europe-wide. Academically Russia sucks but there are a few places where you will feel comfy, will have travel money and a possibility of bringing coauthors. You will be overrespected and cherished if you are (even moderately) promising as a researcher. You will get quite a satisfaction by participating in creating values that didn't exist before -- that's not your dull "just having a job". Questions?
Yes, how far do you get if you do not speak Russian?
There are pretty big american and european communities in Moscow working mostly in the private sector, but some (very few though) work in academics. Anyway, most start with no Russian at all, and learn it on the way. Communication with students and collegues is in English, of course.
Yes, and your research will have to be approved by a committee of Putin-ites before you are allowed to publish it. Heil Russia...

И ведь, иезуитство тут таково, что пнуты Вышка и уже стареющий Евгений Григорьевич, а не остальные подписанты петиции, типа главы РЭШ, у которого вообще Барак наш Обама дипломы вручал.

Okay, this has got to be one of the goofiest comments from a major political figure in recent weeks:
"I don’t consider Larry Summers a serious economist," [Dick] Armey said. “You can get a Ph.D. from Harvard without ever having seriously considered the subject.” (Source).If Dick Armey wants to criticize Larry Summers or the economic policy of the Obama administration, there is no shortage of ammunition and easy targets. But saying Larry is not a serious economist, or that a PhD from one of world's preeminent economics departments doesn't mean much, makes Mr Armey look more than a tad ridiculous.

A surprising effect of the minimum wage:
Growing consumption of increasingly less expensive food, and especially “fast food”, has been cited as a potential cause of increasing rate of obesity in the United States over the past several decades. Because the real minimum wage in the United States has declined by as much as half over 1968-2007 and because minimum wage labor is a major contributor to the cost of food away from home we hypothesized that changes in the minimum wage would be associated with changes in bodyweight over this period. To examine this, we use data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System from 1984-2006 to test whether variation in the real minimum wage was associated with changes in body mass index (BMI).... We find that a $1 decrease in the real minimum wage was associated with a 0.06 increase in BMI.... Real minimum wage decreases can explain 10% of the change in BMI since 1970. We conclude that the declining real minimum wage rates has contributed to the increasing rate of overweight and obesity in the United States.From David Meltzer and Zhuo Chen.

Индекс составлен ведущей американской компанией, которая помогает своим гражданам выбрать наилучшую страну для пенсии. Конечно, для россиян нужно вносить свои коррективы из-за нюансов получения вида на жительство, но все равно очень актуально.
В первой десятке - Эквадор, Мексика, Панама, Уругвай, Италия, Франция, Бразилия, Аргентина и Коста-Рика. При расчете индекса учитывали стоимость недвижимости, культурный и развлекательный фактор, стоимость проживания, безопасность и стабильность, уровень медицинского обслуживания, климат, социальные льготы, инфраструктуру.
Интересно составить подобный индекс для наших соотечественников.
А где планируете провести свою пенсию вы?
